Valentine's 2023 - FAQ
WHAT IS VALENTINE'S DAY AND WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?
Valentine's Day is celebrated on 14th February every year. It used to be a day to honour the Christian saints Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni and this is why some call it Saint Valentine's Day. There's a popular belief that Saint Valentine of Rome was sentenced to death and imprisoned by the Roman Emperor in the third century AD. In prison he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was sent to be executed on 14th February, he wrote her a love letter signed "Your Valentine."
Historically folk traditions across Europe celebrate the arrival of spring on this day, and the new growth of plants and flowers.
Geoffrey Chaucer made the first-recorded reference to the tradition of romance on Valentine's Day in his poem Parliament of Fowls.
Valentine's Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. In Japan and South Korea women give chocolate to men on Valentine's Day, and men give gifts back on "White Day" a month later on 14th March. In many Latin American countries Valentine's Day is known as the "Day of Love and Friendship", and many show acts of appreciation for friends as well as romantic partners.
Be aware that some countries have outlawed the celebration of Valentine's Day due to its Christian origins.
WHAT IS A TRADITIONAL VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT?
Traditionally people give flowers, chocolates and cards on Valentine's Day. But for many people choosing a gift that they really love is considered most special. Popular choices in recent years have been experiences like spa trips and special meals, or long-lasting items like jewellery. Keep reading for some of our own picks.
WHAT CAN I DO ON VALENTINE'S DAY FOR A LOW BUDGET?
Why not plan an experience instead of giving a gift? For those that value quality time, a picnic, homemade meal or even revisiting one of your first dates can be really special. If you would like to give something physical you could make your own "voucher" or card with details of what you've planned.
WHICH IS THE BEST GIFT FOR VALENTINE'S DAY?
Unfortunately there's no easy answer to this one. Try to think about your Valentine and choose something that will be meaningful for them. They might like to feel spoilt with a treat they wouldn't get themselves, or a thoughtful gesture like photos of you together.
